Description
You are looking at one of the most famous prints of Café Terrace at Night, by Vincent van Gogh.The artwork is also known as The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum. Originally titled Coffeehouse, in the evening (Café, le soir) when exhibited in 1891.
Van Gogh created this masterpiece in Arles, France, during mid-September 1888. Although not signed, the painting is referenced in three of his letters.
The spot where Van Gogh painted can still be visited today, situated at the northeastern corner of the Place du Forum. The area was renovated in 1990 and 1991 to resemble the scene depicted in the painting. Van Gogh’s viewpoint was facing south, capturing the illuminated terrace of a popular coffee house and the darkened rue du Palais leading to a former church, now Musée Lapidaire.
In the painting, Van Gogh included a lit shop and tree branches to the right but omitted some Roman monuments next to the shop.
