Description
A phenomenal Van Gogh Print. Joseph Roulin served as the postmaster at the Arles station. Van Gogh frequently visited the station to send paintings to his brother Theo in the Netherlands, which led to a close friendship between them. Van Gogh described Joseph in a letter to Theo as a complex but kind-hearted man, acknowledging his flaws yet valuing his wisdom, empathy, and loyalty.
Between August 1888 and April 1889, Van Gogh painted six consecutive portraits of Joseph, three of which featured flowers in the background. In one vibrant painting, he opted for summer blooms such as poppies, cornflowers, daisies, and roses, depicting them with precision. In contrast, Joseph’s face and lush beard with stylized curls were rendered with swift, expressive brushstrokes.
Always eager for new subjects, Van Gogh seized the opportunity to paint Joseph’s wife and three children when it arose. He ended up creating a total of twenty portraits of the Roulin family.
