Description
Van Gogh painted this seaside view from the beach, evident from sand grains found in the paint layers. Done in Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer during a trip from Arles, France, he applied bold strokes of blue and white, along with green and yellow for the waves, using a palette knife to capture the light’s effect through them.
Van Gogh admired the colors of the Mediterranean Sea, describing it as dynamic and ever-changing, shifting from green to purple or blue, and even taking on pink or grey hues. He placed his bright red signature prominently in the foreground, intending it as a striking contrast against the green surroundings.
