Description
This self-portrait was created during the winter of 1887–88 in Paris. Van Gogh showcased his innovative approach to painting by adopting techniques from the Pointillists. He applied short stripes of paint in various directions, creating a halo effect around his head. Additionally, he experimented boldly with color, juxtaposing complementary hues such as blue and orange in the background, and red and green in the facial hair and eyes. The interplay of these colors intensifies their impact, although over time, the red pigment has faded, altering the contrast with the yellow tones.
