This Van Gogh print is one of his best. A bold red line boldly divides the picture plane, serving as both a boundary and a signature for Van Gogh’s small painting depicting a delicate sprig of flowering almond. Known for their early bloom in spring, almond trees hold a special significance in his work.
Upon his arrival in Arles, France, snow still blanketed the ground. Just over a week later, on March 2nd, Van Gogh penned a letter to his brother detailing the harsh frost and lingering snow, yet amidst this wintry scene, he found inspiration in the resilience of nature. He described his studies of a whitened landscape with the town in the distance, alongside two small yet vibrant studies of a blossoming almond tree, defiantly flowering despite the cold.
This encounter with the blossoming almond tree ignited Van Gogh’s creativity, leading him to embark on an extensive series of paintings showcasing various flowering orchards. Among these subjects were almond, peach, plum, and pear trees, each capturing the essence of nature’s renewal and vitality in the face of adversity.
